What’s funny about this picture (i.e. why it’s famous) is that Diana was at the world’s greatest monument to love alone, without her husband, Prince Charles. 1992 was the year Queen Elizabeth II dubbed annus horibilis, which means “horrible year” in Latin. Despite it being the year that closed with a fire at Windsor castle, it was the year Diana and Charles’ marriage crumbled and the year Fergie and Andrew announced their divorce. Not a good situation for the Queen of the Commonwealth to be in.
